How Is Exact Age Calculated?
Exact calendar age measures completed years, completed months and remaining days between a date of birth and a reference date.
It is more precise than simply subtracting the birth year from the current year.
Basic Age Formula
However, this simple subtraction must be adjusted when the birthday has not yet occurred during the reference year.
Exact years, months and days require actual calendar-date arithmetic.
Exact Age Calculation Example
Example: Suppose someone was born on June 15, 2000.
We want to calculate their age on October 11, 2026.
Example Date Information
- Date of Birth: June 15, 2000
- Calculate Age On: October 11, 2026
Step 1: Calculate Completed Years
Subtract the birth year from the reference year.
The birthday on June 15 has already occurred in 2026.
Step 2: Calculate Remaining Months
From June 15 to September 15 is three complete calendar months.
Step 3: Calculate Remaining Days
From September 15 to October 11 is 26 days.
Step 4: Combine the Results
This example uses completed calendar years and months, followed by remaining days.
Step 5: Find the Next Birthday
The next birthday after October 11, 2026, is June 15, 2027.
The person will turn 27 on that date.
How Do You Calculate Age Before Your Birthday?
If your birthday has not yet occurred in the selected year, subtract one from the difference between the calendar years.
Age Before Birthday Example
Suppose someone was born on December 20, 2000, and the reference date is October 11, 2026.
Since December 20 has not yet occurred, the person is still 25.
They will turn 26 on December 20, 2026.
What Is the Difference Between Exact Age and Age in Years?
Age in completed years tells you how many full birthdays have passed.
Exact calendar age also includes the completed months and remaining days since the most recent birthday.
For example, someone may be 26 years old, but their exact age could be 26 years, 3 months and 26 days.
How Many Days Old Am I?
Your age in days is the number of calendar days between your date of birth and the selected reference date.
Unlike age in calendar years, the day count reflects differences in month lengths and leap years.
Age in Days Example
Suppose a child was born January 1, 2025, and the selected date is January 8, 2025.
For a person born at a specific time of day, exact elapsed hours could differ. This example uses calendar dates only.
How Do You Calculate Age in Weeks?
One week contains seven calendar days.
Divide total elapsed days by seven to find age in weeks.
Age in Weeks Example
Suppose a baby is 70 calendar days old.
If the total number of days is not divisible by seven, the result includes part of a week.
Days to Weeks Conversion Chart
| Age in Days | Age in Weeks |
|---|---|
| 7 | 1 Week |
| 14 | 2 Weeks |
| 21 | 3 Weeks |
| 28 | 4 Weeks |
| 35 | 5 Weeks |
| 42 | 6 Weeks |
| 56 | 8 Weeks |
| 70 | 10 Weeks |
| 84 | 12 Weeks |
| 140 | 20 Weeks |
How Do You Calculate Age in Months?
Calendar months have different numbers of days.
Therefore, calculating age in months is different from dividing total days by 30.
For example, January 15 to February 15 is one complete calendar month.
February 15 to March 15 is also one calendar month, even though the number of days may differ.
Calendar Months Example
For someone born January 10, 2025, the date July 10, 2025 marks six complete calendar months.
For dates between monthly anniversaries, the completed-month count can depend on the chosen calendar convention.
Age in Years to Months Chart
Each full calendar year contains 12 months.

| 2 | 24 |
| 3 | 36 |
| 5 | 60 |
| 10 | 120 |
| 15 | 180 |
| 18 | 216 |
| 21 | 252 |
| 25 | 300 |
| 30 | 360 |
| 40 | 480 |
| 50 | 600 |
These figures represent complete years only and do not include additional partial months.
How Many Days Are in a Year?
A normal Gregorian calendar year has 365 days.
A leap year has 366 days.
Because of leap years, you cannot always determine someone's exact age in days by multiplying their age in years by 365.
How Do Leap Years Affect Age Calculations?
Leap years include February 29, adding an extra calendar day.
Under Gregorian calendar rules, a year is a leap year if it is divisible by four, except century years not divisible by 400.
Leap Year Example
Consider the time between February 28 and March 1.
Leap Year Reference Chart
| Year | Leap Year? | Total Days |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Yes | 366 |
| 2025 | No | 365 |
| 2026 | No | 365 |
| 2027 | No | 365 |
| 2028 | Yes | 366 |
| 2029 | No | 365 |
| 2030 | No | 365 |
| 2032 | Yes | 366 |
How Is a February 29 Birthday Calculated?
Someone born on February 29 has a birthday date that appears only during leap years.
In non-leap years, different legal, administrative and personal conventions may recognize February 28 or March 1 for particular purposes.
The exact calendar age, next birthday and birthday countdown can depend on the calculator's chosen handling of February 29.
For official age requirements, verify the applicable rules rather than relying solely on an online age calculation.
How Do You Calculate Days Until Your Next Birthday?
First determine the next birthday date after or on the selected reference date.
Then calculate the number of calendar days between the reference date and that birthday.
Birthday Countdown Example
Example: Suppose a person was born on October 20.
The reference date is October 11, 2026.
Step 1: Identify the Next Birthday
Step 2: Calculate Remaining Days
This example uses whole calendar days, not an hour-by-hour countdown.
What Happens If Today Is Your Birthday?
When the selected reference date matches the birthday date, the person has completed another full year of age.
For example, a person born May 10, 2000 turns 25 on May 10, 2025.
A birthday countdown can show zero days when the reference date is the birthday itself, depending on how the calculator defines the next occurrence.
How Old Will I Be on a Future Date?
The Age Calculator is not limited to calculating age for today.
You can choose another reference date to estimate your age at a future milestone.
Future Age Example
Suppose someone was born on January 1, 2000.
On January 1, 2030, they will have completed 30 years.
This feature can be useful when planning future birthdays, anniversaries and other age-related milestones.
How Old Was I on a Past Date?
You can also choose a reference date in the past that occurs after your date of birth.
For example, someone born July 4, 2000 was exactly 20 years old on July 4, 2020.
Past-date calculations can be useful for personal timelines and historical comparisons.
Common Birthday Milestones
Birthdays mark completed years since a person's date of birth.
| Birthday | Completed Age |
|---|---|
| 1st | 1 Year |
| 5th | 5 Years |
| 10th | 10 Years |
| 16th | 16 Years |
| 18th | 18 Years |
| 21st | 21 Years |
| 25th | 25 Years |
| 30th | 30 Years |
| 40th | 40 Years |
| 50th | 50 Years |
| 60th | 60 Years |
| 75th | 75 Years |
| 100th | 100 Years |
Age-related legal milestones vary by location and purpose. This table shows completed years only.

Common Age Calculation Mistakes
- Subtracting years without checking the birthday. The birthday may not have occurred yet in the reference year.
- Assuming every month has 30 days. Calendar months have different lengths.
- Ignoring leap years. Some years include February 29.
- Confusing completed months with estimated months. Calendar months are not fixed 30-day periods.
- Confusing age in days with exact clock time. A date-only calculation does not use birth time.
- Entering dates in the wrong order. Confirm the birth date and reference date.
- Ignoring special February 29 rules. Legal or administrative conventions may differ.
- Relying on estimates for official eligibility. Check applicable requirements separately.
