What Is the Difference Between Fahrenheit, Celsius and Kelvin?
Fahrenheit, Celsius and Kelvin measure temperature, but they use different numerical scales.
Fahrenheit (°F)
Fahrenheit is commonly used for everyday temperature reporting in the United States.
At standard atmospheric pressure, water freezes at approximately 32°F and boils at approximately 212°F.
Celsius (°C)
Celsius is widely used for weather, cooking and scientific measurements.
Water freezes at approximately 0°C and boils at approximately 100°C at standard pressure.
Kelvin (K)
Kelvin is the SI base unit of thermodynamic temperature.
The Kelvin scale begins at absolute zero, which is 0 K.
Kelvin temperatures are written without a degree symbol.

Water’s freezing and boiling temperatures shown in this guide refer to approximately standard atmospheric pressure. Actual phase-change temperatures depend on pressure and other conditions.
What Is Absolute Zero?
Absolute zero is the zero point of the Kelvin thermodynamic temperature scale.
It corresponds to exactly 0 K, -273.15°C, and -459.67°F.
Kelvin is an absolute temperature scale, so ordinary thermodynamic temperatures do not extend below 0 K.
At What Temperature Do Fahrenheit and Celsius Match?
Fahrenheit and Celsius have the same numerical value at -40 degrees.
This is a useful reference when comparing the two scales.
What Temperature Does Water Freeze At?
At standard atmospheric pressure, pure water normally freezes at approximately:
Water can freeze at different temperatures when dissolved substances or pressure conditions change.
What Temperature Does Water Boil At?
At standard atmospheric pressure, pure water normally boils at approximately:
At higher elevations, lower atmospheric pressure generally reduces the boiling temperature.
How to Convert Cooking Temperatures
Recipes may list oven temperatures in Fahrenheit or Celsius.
When using a recipe from another country, temperature conversion can help identify the oven setting.

Temperature Conversion for Weather
Weather forecasts commonly use Fahrenheit in the United States and Celsius in many other countries.
A temperature of 86°F is equivalent to 30°C.
Temperature conversion can help when planning travel or interpreting international forecasts.
Temperature Conversion for Science
Scientific calculations frequently use Kelvin because it is an absolute temperature scale.
Kelvin is important in thermodynamics, chemistry, physics, and engineering.
When a scientific formula requires absolute temperature, use Kelvin rather than substituting Celsius.
Temperature Conversion vs. Temperature Change
A temperature reading and a temperature difference are not converted in exactly the same way.
For absolute temperature readings, Fahrenheit and Celsius conversions include an offset of 32.
For temperature differences, the offset is not applied.
For example, a temperature increase of 10°C corresponds to an increase of 18°F.
This does not mean that a temperature reading of 10°C equals 18°F.
Common Temperature Conversion Mistakes
- Forgetting the 32-degree offset. Absolute Fahrenheit and Celsius readings require both multiplication and an offset.
- Confusing Celsius and Kelvin. Their intervals are equal-sized, but their zero points differ.
- Using a degree symbol with Kelvin. Write 300 K, not 300°K.
- Confusing a temperature with a temperature difference. These require different handling of the offset.
- Rounding too early. Keep sufficient precision until the final result.
- Entering physically invalid Kelvin values. Kelvin values cannot be negative for ordinary thermodynamic temperatures.
- Assuming water always boils at 100°C. Boiling temperature depends on atmospheric pressure.
