Body Fat Percentage Calculator

Estimate body fat using a flexible measuring tape. No special equipment required.

Free • US & Metric • Adults 18+
Estimate, not a diagnosis. This tool uses traditional U.S. Navy tape-measure formulas. Results can differ from measured body composition and should not be used for medical decisions. Not intended for children or during pregnancy.

Step 1 — Choose a Formula

Step 2 — Enter Your Measurements

Feet on the left; remaining inches on the right.
Measure just below the larynx; tape snug, not tight.
Measure around your belly button after a relaxed exhale.
Used only to estimate fat mass and fat-free mass.

📏 How to Measure for a More Consistent Estimate

  1. Height: Stand straight, without shoes.
  2. Neck: Measure just below the larynx with the tape level and snug.
  3. Male-based formula: Measure the abdomen at your belly button.
  4. Female-based formula: Measure the natural waist at its narrowest point and hips at their widest point.
  5. Keep it consistent: Stand relaxed, breathe out normally, and repeat measurements to reduce tape-placement differences.

Why two formulas? The traditional circumference equations use different sets of measurements. Choose the formula that best matches the type of estimation you want. These sex-based equations may not fit everyone’s physiology.

💪 Body Fat Percentage Calculator — Complete Guide

Want to estimate your body fat percentage without buying expensive equipment? The free MyCruncher Body Fat Percentage Calculator uses height and body circumference measurements to provide an approximate body composition estimate.

Using the traditional U.S. Navy circumference method, you can estimate your body fat percentage with a flexible measuring tape.

The calculator supports both US and metric units and offers male-based and female-based estimation formulas.

You can also optionally enter body weight to estimate:

  • Body fat percentage
  • Fat mass in pounds or kilograms
  • Fat-free mass in pounds or kilograms
Important: Body fat estimates from tape measurements are approximations, not clinical measurements or diagnoses. This calculator is intended for adults and is not designed for use during pregnancy or for children.

⚖️ What Is Body Fat Percentage?

Body fat percentage describes the estimated portion of your total body weight made up of fat.

The remaining body weight is called fat-free mass. It includes muscle, bones, organs, water, and other non-fat tissue.

Body Fat Percentage Formula

Body Fat Percentage = (Fat Mass ÷ Total Body Weight) × 100

For example, if someone weighs 180 pounds and has an estimated body fat percentage of 20%, their estimated fat mass is 36 pounds.

180 lb × 0.20 = 36 lb of estimated fat mass

That would leave approximately 144 pounds of fat-free mass.

However, the tape-measure calculator does not directly measure fat mass. It estimates a percentage first, then uses optional body weight to calculate those amounts.

📋 How to Use the Body Fat Percentage Calculator

  1. Choose a formula. Select the male-based or female-based U.S. Navy circumference equation.
  2. Select your measurement units. Choose US measurements in inches and pounds, or metric measurements in centimeters and kilograms.
  3. Enter your height. Use an accurate height measurement taken without shoes.
  4. Measure your neck. Keep the tape snug and level without compressing the skin.
  5. Enter your abdomen or waist. The male-based formula uses the abdomen at the navel. The female-based formula uses the natural waist.
  6. Enter your hips if required. The female-based equation also uses hip circumference.
  7. Add body weight if desired. Weight is optional and is used only to estimate fat mass and fat-free mass.
  8. Click Calculate Body Fat. Review your estimated percentage and body composition details.

Use the Reset button to restore the original calculator values and begin a new calculation.

📏 How to Measure Body Fat With a Tape Measure

Accurate and consistent tape placement is important because small circumference differences can change the estimated result.

Measurement Where to Measure Used By
Height Standing upright without shoes Both formulas
Neck Just below the larynx, without compressing tissue Both formulas
Abdomen Around the belly button after a relaxed exhale Male-based formula
Natural waist At the narrowest natural waist point Female-based formula
Hips Around the fullest part of the buttocks Female-based formula
Weight Use a body-weight measurement if available Optional for both

Tips for More Consistent Measurements

  • Use a flexible, non-stretch measuring tape.
  • Keep the tape in contact with the skin without pulling it uncomfortably tight.
  • Stand in a natural, relaxed position.
  • Avoid flexing your muscles or pulling in your stomach.
  • Take measurements after a normal, relaxed exhalation.
  • Repeat measurements to check for major differences.
  • If tracking changes over time, use the same measuring locations and technique each time.
Measurement reminder: Different body-fat methods may use different locations for waist or abdomen measurements. Follow the directions shown for your selected calculator formula.

⚓ How Does the U.S. Navy Body Fat Formula Work?

The traditional U.S. Navy circumference method estimates body fat percentage from body measurements rather than measuring body fat directly.

The two equations use different circumference combinations.

Male-Based Body Fat Formula

Body Fat % = 86.010 × log10(Abdomen − Neck) − 70.041 × log10(Height) + 36.76

This formula uses:

  • Height
  • Abdominal circumference at the navel
  • Neck circumference

Female-Based Body Fat Formula

Body Fat % = 163.205 × log10(Waist + Hips − Neck) − 97.684 × log10(Height) − 78.387

This formula uses:

  • Height
  • Natural waist circumference
  • Hip circumference
  • Neck circumference

What Does log10 Mean?

The notation log10 means the base-10 logarithm of a number.

These equations are nonlinear, which means changes in body measurements do not necessarily produce equal changes in estimated body fat.

Important formula detail: All circumference and height measurements are converted to inches before the equation is evaluated. The calculator automatically converts metric entries.

MyCruncher applies these equations directly for general educational estimation. It does not perform official military fitness assessments or apply military measurement-rounding procedures.

🧮 Example: Male-Based Body Fat Calculation

This example matches the default measurements in the MyCruncher calculator.

Example Measurements

  • Height: 5 feet 10 inches
  • Neck circumference: 15 inches
  • Abdomen circumference: 34 inches
  • Body weight: 180 pounds

Step 1 — Convert Height to Inches

5 feet 10 inches equals 70 inches.

Step 2 — Calculate Circumference Difference

34 − 15 = 19 inches.

Step 3 — Apply the Equation

Body Fat % = 86.010 × log10(19) − 70.041 × log10(70) + 36.76
Estimated Body Fat: 17.5%

Step 4 — Estimate Fat Mass

180 × 0.17513 ≈ 31.5 pounds.

Estimated Fat Mass: 31.5 lb

Step 5 — Estimate Fat-Free Mass

180 − 31.5 ≈ 148.5 pounds.

Estimated Fat-Free Mass: 148.5 lb

These outputs reproduce the calculator's approximate default result. They do not describe a medical diagnosis or an individual health target.

🧮 Example: Female-Based Body Fat Calculation

The female-based circumference equation also includes a hip measurement.

Example Measurements

  • Height: 5 feet 5 inches
  • Neck circumference: 13 inches
  • Natural waist: 30 inches
  • Hip circumference: 40 inches
  • Body weight: 150 pounds

Step 1 — Convert Height

5 feet 5 inches equals 65 inches.

Step 2 — Calculate Combined Circumference

30 + 40 − 13 = 57 inches.

Step 3 — Apply the Equation

Body Fat % = 163.205 × log10(57) − 97.684 × log10(65) − 78.387
Estimated Body Fat: 31.1%

Step 4 — Estimate Body Composition

Using the unrounded percentage result:

Estimated Fat Mass: 46.6 lb
Estimated Fat-Free Mass: 103.4 lb

These results are mathematical estimates based on the chosen circumference equation.

📐 Body Fat Calculator: Inches vs. Centimeters

MyCruncher allows you to enter measurements using either US customary or metric units.

Measurement US Units Metric Units
Height Feet and inches Centimeters
Neck Inches Centimeters
Waist or abdomen Inches Centimeters
Hips Inches Centimeters
Optional weight Pounds Kilograms

Useful Measurement Conversions

Inches = Centimeters ÷ 2.54
Pounds ≈ Kilograms × 2.20462

For example, a neck circumference of 38.1 cm equals 15 inches.

The calculator automatically handles these conversions, although rounding entered measurements may create small differences between US and metric results.

💪 Fat Mass vs. Fat-Free Mass

Your body weight is made up of different tissues and components.

What Is Fat Mass?

Fat mass describes the estimated weight of fat within the body.

Estimated Fat Mass = Body Weight × (Body Fat % ÷ 100)

What Is Fat-Free Mass?

Fat-free mass includes everything that is not counted as fat mass.

This includes muscle, bones, water, blood, organs, and other tissues.

Estimated Fat-Free Mass = Body Weight − Estimated Fat Mass
Important distinction: Fat-free mass is not the same thing as muscle mass. A fat-free mass estimate cannot tell you precisely how much muscle you have.

You can calculate body fat percentage without entering body weight.

Body weight is only needed for the optional fat mass and fat-free mass calculations.

⚖️ Body Fat Percentage vs. BMI: What's the Difference?

Body Fat Percentage and Body Mass Index (BMI) provide different information about body measurements.

BMI compares weight with height, while a body fat percentage estimate attempts to describe the proportion of body weight made up of fat.

Feature Body Fat Percentage BMI
Primary purpose Estimate proportion of body fat Screen weight relative to height
Inputs used here Height and tape measurements Height and weight
Requires body weight? No, unless estimating fat mass Yes
Measures body fat directly? No No
Medical diagnosis? No No

BMI does not distinguish between muscle, fat, and bone mass.

It also cannot determine where fat is located in the body.

Body fat estimation methods offer different information, but each method has limitations.

🎯 How Accurate Is the Navy Body Fat Calculator?

The Navy circumference method provides a convenient estimate without requiring scans or specialist equipment.

However, the result depends on body proportions, measurement technique, and how closely an individual matches the population used to develop the equations.

A tape-measure estimate can differ from results obtained with specialized body composition equipment.

Common Body Composition Methods

Method How It Works Main Consideration
Tape measurement Uses circumference equations Sensitive to measuring technique
Skinfold calipers Estimates fat from skinfold thickness Depends heavily on operator skill
Smart scales / BIA Estimates body composition using electrical impedance Hydration and device conditions affect results
DXA / DEXA Uses imaging to estimate body composition Requires specialized equipment and can vary by system

Why Might My Results Change?

  • Different tape placement
  • Changes in posture
  • Different tape tension
  • Measurement rounding
  • Changes in body circumference
  • Using a different measurement method
Tracking reminder: A small difference between two estimated percentages does not automatically mean body fat changed. Try to keep your measurement technique consistent.

💚 Understanding Your Body Fat Result Safely

There is no single body fat percentage that fully determines whether someone is healthy.

Body composition is only one part of overall health. Age, physiology, medical history, physical activity, and other factors matter.

Military body composition standards are designed for specific organizational fitness requirements. They should not be treated as universal health targets.

Similarly, a lower body fat percentage is not always healthier. Body fat serves important physiological functions.

Avoid using one estimated number as a diagnosis or as the basis for extreme dietary or exercise changes.

Appropriate use: This tool is intended for general educational estimation by adults. It is not intended for children, pregnancy, or clinical body composition assessment. Seek guidance from a qualified healthcare professional for individualized health or nutrition questions.
