How Do You Calculate Your SAT Score?
Your SAT total score is calculated by adding your Reading and Writing section score to your Math section score.
For example, a student who earns 650 in Reading and Writing and 720 in Math has a combined SAT score of 1370.
This calculation is exact when the two section scores are known. However, converting raw correct-answer counts into official section scores requires the SAT’s scoring process.

Digital SAT Format, Sections and Scoring
The digital SAT contains two major sections: Reading and Writing, followed by Math.
Each section contains two timed modules. The second module adapts to performance in the first module.
| SAT Section | Questions | Time | Score Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading & Writing | 54 | 64 minutes | 200โ800 |
| Math | 44 | 70 minutes | 200โ800 |
| Total | 98 | 134 minutes | 400โ1600 |
Standard testing time totals 2 hours and 14 minutes, excluding the 10-minute break between the two sections.
Reading and Writing consists of two 32-minute modules. Math consists of two 35-minute modules.
The test also includes unscored pretest questions that help with future test development.
How Does Digital SAT Adaptive Scoring Work?
Unlike a simple classroom exam, the digital SAT does not assign a fixed scaled score to every possible number of correct answers.
Each section begins with a module containing questions of varying difficulty. Performance in that module determines the difficulty level of the second module.
In addition, SAT scoring accounts for question characteristics and statistical information. As a result, two students with similar raw correct-answer totals may receive different scaled scores.
Not reliably for the adaptive digital SAT. Knowing only the number of correct answers does not provide enough information to reproduce an official 200โ800 section score.
MyCruncher’s Practice Tracker calculates accuracy percentages, not estimated official section scores.
For an SAT-scale practice score, take a scored official full-length practice test using College Board’s Bluebook application.
Understanding the SAT Reading and Writing Score
The Reading and Writing section measures several important language and reasoning skills.
Its questions use short reading passages and test how well students understand, analyze, revise, and edit written material.
Main Reading and Writing Skills
Understand central ideas, interpret evidence, and make logical inferences.
Analyze vocabulary in context, text structure, purpose, and connections between texts.
Improve writing by selecting effective organization, wording, and transitions.
Apply grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, and usage rules.
Your Reading and Writing section score ranges from 200 to 800. The official score report also provides feedback about performance across content areas.
Understanding the SAT Math Score
The SAT Math section measures mathematical reasoning and problem-solving abilities relevant to college preparation.
Students encounter both multiple-choice questions and questions requiring a student-produced answer.
Main SAT Math Content Areas
Linear equations, inequalities, functions, and systems of equations.
Nonlinear equations, polynomial expressions, and more advanced functions.
Percentages, ratios, data interpretation, probability, and statistics.
Angles, triangles, circles, area, volume, and trigonometric relationships.
Math is also scored from 200 to 800. Students can use the permitted calculator tools during the Math section.
SAT Score Calculation Examples
Here are examples showing how known SAT section scores combine into total scores.
| Reading & Writing | Math | Total SAT |
|---|---|---|
| 500 | 500 | 1000 |
| 550 | 600 | 1150 |
| 600 | 650 | 1250 |
| 650 | 720 | 1370 |
| 700 | 750 | 1450 |
| 800 | 800 | 1600 |
๐ These are arithmetic examples, not raw-question conversion tables, admission guarantees, or predicted SAT scores.
How to Calculate Your SAT Target Score
Setting a target score can help students organize their SAT preparation and understand the improvement they need.
Example: Improving From 1270 to 1400
Suppose your current Reading and Writing score is 620 and your Math score is 650. You have a total of 1270.
To reach 1400, one possible combination would be 650 in Reading and Writing and 750 in Math.
Alternatively, you could reach the same total with 700 in Reading and Writing and 700 in Math.
| Reading & Writing | Math | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 620 | 780 | 1400 |
| 650 | 750 | 1400 |
| 700 | 700 | 1400 |
| 750 | 650 | 1400 |
These possibilities help visualize different improvement paths. They are not estimates of what a student will score on a future test.
What Is an SAT Superscore?
An SAT superscore combines the highest Reading and Writing score and the highest Math score from multiple SAT test dates.
Some colleges consider these highest section scores when reviewing applications. However, institutional policies vary, so always verify the policy of each college.
SAT Superscore Example
| Test | Reading & Writing | Math | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Test 1 | 680 | 620 | 1300 |
| Test 2 | 650 | 750 | 1400 |
| Superscore | 680 | 750 | 1430 |
Can You Send Only Your Best Sections?
Not individually through SAT score sending. College Board’s Score Choice process concerns test dates, rather than choosing individual sections from different dates.
A college that superscores may then consider the highest section scores across the eligible test dates it receives.
๐ A potential superscore is a planning calculation. It is not a separate official test-day SAT score.
Digital SAT Practice Accuracy Calculator
MyCruncher’s Practice Tracker helps students measure how many practice questions they answered correctly.
The standard digital SAT contains 54 Reading and Writing questions and 44 Math questions, for 98 questions in total.
Example: 80 Correct Answers
Suppose a student answers 45 of 54 Reading and Writing questions correctly and 35 of 44 Math questions correctly.
Students can use these percentages to monitor practice accuracy over time. However, the percentages do not translate directly into official SAT scores.
The digital SAT includes adaptive modules and unscored pretest questions. Its official scoring process is more complex than a correct-answer percentage.
For an actual SAT-scale practice result, use an officially scored Bluebook practice test.
SAT College Readiness Benchmarks
College Board publishes benchmarks that help students understand their readiness for typical first-year college coursework.
The SAT section benchmarks are 480 for Reading and Writing and 530 for Math.
Meeting a benchmark is one indicator of college readiness. It does not guarantee admission or success in a particular program.
Likewise, a section score below a benchmark does not determine whether a student can attend college.
Admission decisions and testing requirements vary among institutions.
What Is a Good SAT Score?
A good SAT score depends on a student’s goals, academic interests, and the colleges they are considering.
For example, a score that fits one college’s typical admitted-student range may be below another college’s range.
Instead of relying on one universal score target, compare your results with published information from your intended colleges.
How to Choose a Target SAT Score
- Research the current SAT requirements and score ranges for colleges on your list.
- Review your most recent official or scored practice SAT results.
- Identify whether Reading and Writing or Math offers more opportunities for improvement.
- Enter your desired total into MyCruncher’s Target Score Planner.
- Use future practice results to review and adjust your goals.
Remember that college admissions are not determined by a single test score. Requirements and evaluation methods differ by school.
SAT Score Percentiles Explained
An SAT percentile compares your score with the scores of a reference group of students.
For example, a percentile ranking of 75 indicates a score equal to or above approximately 75% of the relevant comparison group.
Percentiles are different from percent-correct scores. A 75th-percentile result does not mean you answered 75% of the questions correctly.
College Board reports percentiles with official SAT score information. These depend on the relevant reference group and reporting methodology.
Our calculator does not assign a percentile from the entered total alone. Check your official score report for the applicable percentile information.
SAT Score vs. PSAT Score: What’s the Difference?
The SAT and PSAT assessments are related, but their score ranges are not always identical.
| Assessment | Total Score Range |
|---|---|
| SAT | 400โ1600 |
| PSAT/NMSQT | 320โ1520 |
| PSAT 10 | 320โ1520 |
| PSAT 8/9 | 240โ1440 |
This MyCruncher calculator is designed specifically for SAT section scores on the 200โ800 scale.
Don’t enter PSAT section scores expecting the calculator to interpret PSAT scoring or predict a future SAT result.
How to Improve Your SAT Score With Practice
A useful SAT study plan starts with understanding your current performance.
Start With an Official Practice Test
Use a full-length scored practice test in Bluebook to establish a baseline. Then review the section and skill feedback.
Review Missed Questions
Identify whether mistakes resulted from unfamiliar concepts, time pressure, reading errors, or avoidable calculation errors.
Practice Weak Content Areas
Focus your practice on skills that need attention. For example, students may review algebra, data analysis, grammar, or evidence-based reading questions.
Track Improvement Over Time
Use the Practice Tracker to monitor accuracy during complete practice sessions.
For official scaled-score progress, compare results from scored SAT practice tests rather than relying on accuracy alone.
Revisit Your Target Score
As your practice results change, return to the Target Score Planner and update your goals.
