What Is a Golf Handicap?
A golf Handicap Index represents a player’s demonstrated playing ability on a scale that can be used across different golf courses and tee sets.
It uses a player’s past scoring performances, adjusted for course difficulty, rather than simply averaging all raw golf scores.
A lower Handicap Index generally represents stronger demonstrated scoring ability.
A golfer’s Handicap Index is not necessarily the same number of strokes they receive at every course.
What Is a Golf Score Differential?
A Score Differential measures how a golfer performed relative to the difficulty of the course and tees played.
The World Handicap System uses Adjusted Gross Score, Course Rating, Slope Rating, and any applicable Playing Conditions Calculation adjustment.
Golf Score Differential Formula
The number 113 represents the standard Slope Rating used in the calculation.
PCC stands for Playing Conditions Calculation. It may adjust the differential when playing conditions significantly affect scores.
For a simple example, we’ll assume PCC equals zero.
Golf Score Differential Calculation Example
Example: Suppose you finish a round with an adjusted gross score of 90 on a course with a Course Rating of 72.0 and a Slope Rating of 113.
Example Golf Round Information
- Adjusted Gross Score: 90
- Course Rating: 72.0
- Slope Rating: 113
- PCC Adjustment: 0
Step 1: Subtract the Course Rating
Step 2: Calculate the Slope Adjustment
Step 3: Calculate the Score Differential
This round produces a Score Differential of 18.0 under the stated assumptions.
A lower differential generally represents a better performance relative to the course difficulty.
Golf Handicap Calculation Example Using Three Rounds
Let’s use the three default rounds shown in the MyCruncher Calculator.
| Round | Adjusted Score | Course Rating | Slope |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 90 | 72.0 | 113 |
| 2 | 88 | 72.0 | 113 |
| 3 | 86 | 72.0 | 113 |
Step 1: Calculate Each Differential
With a Slope Rating of 113 and a PCC adjustment of zero, each differential is the adjusted gross score minus the Course Rating.
Step 2: Select the Lowest Differential
For three eligible 18-hole Score Differentials, the WHS table uses the lowest one.
Step 3: Apply the Three-Score Adjustment
The current WHS table applies an adjustment of minus 2.0 when three Score Differentials are available.
This is an example of the WHS three-score method, assuming all rounds are eligible and no further adjustments apply.
MyCruncher’s displayed estimate may differ depending on its implemented calculation rules.
How Many Golf Scores Are Used to Calculate a Handicap?
Under the World Handicap System, the number of Score Differentials used depends on how many qualifying scores are in the player’s scoring record.
Once 20 differentials are available, the lowest eight of the most recent 20 are averaged as the starting point.
World Handicap System Calculation Table
| Number of Scores | Differentials Used | Adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Lowest 1 | −2.0 |
| 4 | Lowest 1 | −1.0 |
| 5 | Lowest 1 | 0 |
| 6 | Lowest 2 Average | −1.0 |
| 7–8 | Lowest 2 Average | 0 |
| 9–11 | Lowest 3 Average | 0 |
| 12–14 | Lowest 4 Average | 0 |
| 15–16 | Lowest 5 Average | 0 |
| 17–18 | Lowest 6 Average | 0 |
| 19 | Lowest 7 Average | 0 |
| 20 | Lowest 8 Average | 0 |
This is the USGA World Handicap System calculation table. Official scoring records may also involve PCC, exceptional-score reductions, handicap caps, and other adjustments.
What Is a Course Rating in Golf?
Course Rating represents the expected difficulty of a particular course and tee set for a scratch golfer under normal conditions.
For example, a Course Rating of 72.0 is not the same thing as saying every golfer should shoot 72.
The rating is used with the adjusted score and Slope Rating to calculate a Score Differential.
Always use the Course Rating for the exact tees played.
What Is Slope Rating in Golf?
Slope Rating measures relative course difficulty for a bogey golfer compared with a scratch golfer.
It is used to normalize the Score Differential across courses and tee sets of different difficulty.
The standard Slope Rating is 113.
A higher Slope Rating generally indicates greater relative difficulty for a bogey golfer.
How Does Slope Rating Affect Your Differential?
Let’s compare an adjusted score of 90 with a Course Rating of 72.0 and a PCC of zero.
| Slope Rating | Score Differential |
|---|---|
| 100 | 20.3 |
| 113 | 18.0 |
| 125 | 16.3 |
| 135 | 15.1 |
| 145 | 14.0 |
This chart holds Course Rating and adjusted gross score constant to isolate the effect of Slope Rating.
Real courses may also have different Course Ratings.
What Is an Adjusted Gross Score?
Adjusted Gross Score is the score used for handicapping after applicable hole-score adjustments have been made.
The World Handicap System uses a maximum hole score for handicapping purposes, generally net double bogey for a player with an established Handicap Index.
Your adjusted gross score may therefore differ from the raw total written on your scorecard.
Use appropriately adjusted scores when entering MyCruncher calculations.
What Is the Playing Conditions Calculation?
PCC stands for Playing Conditions Calculation.
Under the WHS, PCC may account for unusually difficult or easy playing conditions on a particular day.
Weather, course setup, and other conditions can sometimes lead to a PCC adjustment.
The official system determines the applicable adjustment using submitted scores.
The MyCruncher calculator’s visible inputs do not include a separate PCC field.
Its estimate should therefore not be treated as an official calculation that captures every possible playing conditions adjustment.
Handicap Index vs. Course Handicap
A Handicap Index is a portable measure of demonstrated golf ability.
A Course Handicap converts that index into the strokes applicable to a specific golf course and tee set.
Course Handicap Formula
Course Handicap Example
Suppose a golfer has a Handicap Index of 12.0.
The selected tees have a Slope Rating of 125, Course Rating 72.0, and par 72.
The Course Handicap is approximately 13 strokes when rounded to the nearest whole number.
For certain uses, the unrounded Course Handicap is retained before the Playing Handicap calculation.
What Is a Playing Handicap?
Playing Handicap represents the number of strokes a golfer receives or gives in a particular format of play.
It can account for the applicable handicap allowance and competition rules.
The correct allowance depends on the format and applicable competition rules.
MyCruncher’s main Golf Handicap Calculator estimates a Handicap Index, not a full competition Playing Handicap.
Why Doesn’t My Handicap Equal My Average Golf Score?
Your Handicap Index is not calculated by simply averaging all raw round scores.
Instead, the WHS uses Score Differentials that account for course difficulty.
It also selects a prescribed number of lower differentials rather than every score in the record.
This produces an index intended to represent demonstrated playing ability rather than a simple average round.
How to Track Golf Improvement
- Enter accurate scores. Use the correct adjusted gross score for each round.
- Use the correct tees. Check the Course Rating and Slope Rating for the tees played.
- Track multiple rounds. A larger scoring record provides more information about performance.
- Review your differentials. Compare how you performed relative to course difficulty.
- Monitor long-term trends. Do not judge progress from only one round.
- Practice consistently. Use your scores to identify areas for improvement.
- Use official reporting. Post eligible scores through an authorized handicapping service when an official Handicap Index is needed.
