This is an unofficial educational estimator, not a certified California guideline calculator or a prediction of a court order.

It uses income figures you enter. It does not calculate taxes, all allowable deductions, or every legal adjustment. Actual child support may be substantially different.

Step 1 โ€” Children

Count only children covered by the support calculation between these two parents.

๐Ÿ’ต Step 2 โ€” Monthly Parental Income

Enter each parent's estimated monthly California guideline net disposable income, not simply gross earnings or paycheck take-home pay.

Estimated guideline net income for Parent A, per month.
Estimated guideline net income for Parent B, per month.
โ“ What is guideline net disposable income?

California starts with gross income and applies deductions permitted under Family Code Section 4059.

These may include actual federal and state tax liabilities, FICA, certain mandatory retirement or union contributions, qualifying health insurance premiums, and other legally permitted deductions.

Your regular take-home paycheck may not equal the income figure required under California's child support guidelines.

Read California Family Code 4059 โ†’

๐Ÿ“… Step 3 โ€” Parenting Time

Enter the approximate percentage of time Parent A has primary physical responsibility for the children. Parent B's share will be treated as the remaining percentage.
Parenting Time Example

If Parent A has the children 30% of the time, Parent B has them approximately 70% of the time.

California generally uses the higher earner's share of parenting time in its guideline formula. Arrangements may require special treatment when different children have different schedules.

๐Ÿฅ Step 4 โ€” Additional Child Expenses

These optional costs will be shown separately for budgeting. They are not automatically added to the basic formula estimate.

Actual court-ordered add-ons, expense allocations, and health insurance obligations may differ. Do not enter health insurance premiums here if they are already reflected in your guideline net-income figure.

๐Ÿ”’ No names, addresses, or case numbers are needed. Do not enter identifying details into this calculator.

Not sure what parenting-time percentage to enter in the Child Support Calculator? Use this helper to estimate Parent A's share of parenting responsibility.

California considers the time each parent has primary physical responsibility for the children. Overnight counts alone may not capture every arrangement.

โฐ Weekly Parenting Responsibility

Enter the approximate number of hours in a normal 168-hour week when Parent A has primary physical responsibility for the children.
Enter additional hours Parent A gains (+) or loses (-) over the year compared with the regular weekly schedule. Do not count hours already included above.

๐Ÿ’ก Include time based on actual physical responsibility, not just where the children sleep.

โš–๏ธ Important California Guidance

This helper provides an approximate planning percentage. It does not determine legal custody, visitation rights, or the parenting-time percentage a court will use.

If different children have different parenting schedules, or responsibility is disputed, additional analysis may be necessary.

You can estimate basic monthly support, compare parenting-time scenarios, organize income information, and print a planning summary before using California's official calculator.

How Is Child Support Calculated in California?

California uses a statewide guideline established under Family Code Section 4055.

Unlike a simple flat percentage of one parent's paycheck, the basic formula considers both parents' guideline net disposable incomes and the higher earner's share of parenting time.

California Basic Formula CS = K ร— [HN โˆ’ (H% ร— TN)] California Family Code Section 4055
CS

Basic child support amount before applicable adjustments and additional allocations.

K

Income allocation factor, determined using combined guideline net income and parenting time.

HN

Higher earner's monthly guideline net disposable income.

H%

Higher earner's approximate percentage of primary physical responsibility for the children.

TN

Combined monthly guideline net disposable income of both parents.

In addition, California applies statutory multipliers when calculating basic support for more than one child. Depending on the circumstances, the result may also require adjustments and add-ons.

California's guideline formula was updated effective September 1, 2024. The basic formula alone does not reproduce every determination made by certified guideline software.

California Child Support Calculation Example

Consider a hypothetical family with one child and the following assumed guideline net incomes.

Parent A Monthly Net Income $5,000
Parent B Monthly Net Income $3,500
Parent A Parenting Time 30%
Number of Children 1

Combined monthly guideline net income is $8,500. For this illustration, the statutory K factor is 0.325.

Worked Example 0.325 ร— [5,000 โˆ’ (0.30 ร— 8,500)] Unrounded basic result: $796.25
Illustrative Basic Monthly Support $796 Parent A would pay Parent B under these simplified assumptions.

This is an example of the basic statutory formula, not a certified child support determination. The actual guideline amount may differ because of deductions, add-ons, adjustments, and other case-specific information.

What Income Counts Toward California Child Support?

Income is one of the most important factors in child support calculations.

Under California Family Code Sections 4058 and 4059, guideline net disposable income is determined from legally relevant income and allowable deductions.

Gross Income May Include

  • Wages and salaries
  • Applicable overtime earnings
  • Bonuses and commissions
  • Self-employment income
  • Certain investment or rental income
  • Other income recognized under California law

Potentially Relevant Deductions

  • Applicable federal and California income tax liabilities
  • Required payroll contributions
  • Certain mandatory retirement contributions
  • Qualifying health insurance premiums
  • Other deductions allowed under California Family Code Section 4059

However, not every deduction shown on a paycheck is allowable for child support purposes. For example, actual tax liability may differ from the amount withheld from a paycheck.

Use the Monthly Income Helper

MyCruncher's expandable Monthly Income Helper converts weekly, biweekly, twice-monthly, monthly, and annual earnings into monthly amounts.

It also provides a worksheet for organizing possible deductions. The preliminary worksheet remainder is not automatically a legally correct guideline net disposable income figure.

How Parenting Time Affects California Child Support

Parenting time can make an important difference in the basic guideline calculation.

California generally considers the percentage of time a parent has primary physical responsibility for the children.

The legally relevant percentage isn't necessarily the percentage of overnight stays. Daytime responsibility, school schedules, holidays, and other circumstances can matter.

Parenting Time Percentage Example

Suppose Parent A is responsible for the children for approximately 48 hours of a typical 168-hour week.

Weekly Hours Calculation 48 รท 168 ร— 100 Approximately 28.6% parenting time

This is a planning approximation. Actual responsibility may vary during school breaks, vacations, holidays, or other arrangements.

Use the Parenting Time Helper

The expandable Parenting Time Percentage Helper lets you estimate percentages using weekly hours or annual overnights.

You can then transfer the approximate percentage into the main calculator without retyping it.

Compare Child Support With Different Parenting-Time Scenarios

What happens when you change the parenting-time percentage while keeping both parents' income assumptions the same?

MyCruncher's What-If Comparison lets you explore three scenarios side by side.

Example: one child, Parent A $5,000 and Parent B $3,500 in assumed monthly guideline net income
Parent A Time Illustrative Monthly Amount
30% $796
40% $560
50% $281

This example illustrates how the mathematical result changes when parenting time changes.

โš–๏ธ These scenarios are not custody recommendations or guaranteed support amounts. Parenting arrangements should reflect the children's circumstances and applicable law.

Childcare, Healthcare, and Additional Child Support Expenses

Basic child support is not always the complete financial obligation.

California law addresses certain additional support expenses, including qualifying work-related childcare and reasonable uninsured healthcare costs.

Other expenses may be addressed depending on the circumstances and applicable court orders.

๐Ÿง’ Childcare

Potentially qualifying childcare expenses related to employment or other circumstances recognized under California law.

๐Ÿฅ Uninsured Healthcare

Reasonable medical or healthcare costs for children that are not covered by insurance.

For clarity, MyCruncher displays entered childcare and uninsured healthcare expenses separately from the basic-formula result. However, it does not determine how a court would allocate those expenses.

California Child Support Low-Income Adjustment

California provides a low-income adjustment mechanism for qualifying parents with limited ability to pay.

For 2026, the threshold is $2,929 per month in the paying parent's guideline net disposable income.

When the paying parent's income is below the applicable threshold, a presumptive adjustment may reduce the basic support amount. The presumption can be rebutted under applicable law.

โš ๏ธ Important Limitation

MyCruncher identifies when its entered income suggests the low-income adjustment may apply, but it does not automatically calculate that adjustment.

Use California's certified Guideline Calculator to evaluate the applicable support calculation and any adjustment range.

The threshold is year-specific. Review the current California guideline before relying on a calculation in a later year.

Print and Compare Your Child Support Planning Results

The Printable Child Support Planning Summary creates a report based on the calculation you've completed.

It includes the income assumptions, number of children, parenting-time percentages, monthly and annual basic-formula amounts, and separately listed additional expenses.

California Child Support Calculator FAQs

How is child support calculated in California?

California uses a statewide guideline formula that considers parental guideline net disposable income, parenting time, and the number of children. Other adjustments and expenses may also apply.

Is California child support based on gross income or net income?

The basic formula uses guideline net disposable income, determined under California law. This is not necessarily the same as gross earnings or take-home pay.

Does 50/50 custody mean no child support?

No. Equal parenting time does not automatically eliminate child support. Differences in parental income and other circumstances may still produce a support obligation.

Does California consider both parents' incomes?

Yes. Both parents' guideline net disposable incomes are relevant to the statewide basic child support formula.

Does child support increase for additional children?

The statutory formula includes child-count multipliers for multiple children. The final result may also depend on each family's circumstances.

Are bonuses and overtime included in child support?

Some bonuses, overtime, commissions, and other earnings may count as income under California law. Their treatment depends on the relevant circumstances.

Can childcare expenses affect a child support order?

Yes. Qualifying childcare and other expenses may be addressed through additional support provisions.

How do I calculate parenting time percentages?

Estimate the percentage of time a parent has primary physical responsibility for the children. Weekly hours can provide a planning starting point, but the legally relevant percentage depends on the circumstances.

Is MyCruncher's California Child Support Calculator official?

No. MyCruncher provides an unofficial educational estimator. California's certified Guideline Calculator should be used for more complete verification.

Can I change an existing child support order?

A parent may be able to request modification of an existing support order when applicable circumstances change. The court or local child support agency can provide information about the appropriate process.

Can I print my child support estimate?

Yes. MyCruncher's Printable Planning Summary organizes the entered assumptions and basic-formula result for personal financial planning.
