📚 How This Calculator Works
The calculator combines your current class average and final exam score using their respective weights.
(Target Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Exam Weight)) ÷ Exam Weight
Predicted Course Grade:Current Grade × (1 − Exam Weight) + Exam Score × Exam Weight
Use exam weight as a decimal in these formulas.
Example: If you currently have an 84% grade, your final is worth 25%, and you want a 90% overall grade, you need 108% on the exam. Without extra credit, that target is out of reach. The highest possible overall grade would be 88%.

Knowing what you need on a final exam can help you plan your studying and understand your academic goals.
The free MyCruncher Final Exam Calculator estimates the exam score required to reach a desired overall course grade. It also predicts your final class grade based on an expected exam score.
Students in high school, college, and university can use this calculator for classes where a final exam contributes a known percentage of the overall course grade.
📊 How to Calculate the Grade You Need on Your Final
You'll need three pieces of information:
- Your current course grade before the final exam.
- The percentage of your total course grade assigned to the final exam.
- The overall course grade you want to achieve.
Final Exam Grade Formula
Convert the exam weight into a decimal when using this formula.
Worked Example
A student currently has an 86% course average. The final exam counts for 30% of the overall grade. The student wants to finish with an 88%.
The student needs approximately 92.67% on the final exam to finish with an 88% overall course grade, assuming the only remaining graded component is the final.
📈 How Different Exam Scores Affect Your Final Grade
Suppose your current grade is 85% and your final exam counts for 20% of the course.
| Final Exam Score | Overall Course Grade |
|---|---|
| 60% | 80% |
| 70% | 82% |
| 80% | 84% |
| 90% | 86% |
| 100% | 88% |
This example shows how exam weight affects the final result. When the exam is worth 20%, increasing the exam score by 10 percentage points increases the overall course grade by 2 percentage points.
🎯 Can You Still Get an A, B, or Passing Grade?
The calculator shows whether your target is mathematically achievable based on the maximum normal exam score of 100%.
If the required exam score exceeds 100%, the target cannot be reached under the entered assumptions without additional points, extra credit, or other grading adjustments.
If the required score is zero or negative, your target is already mathematically secured even if you earn 0% on the final.
Always check your syllabus and teacher's grading policy. Letter-grade thresholds, grading curves, rounding, and extra credit differ between schools.
