๐ŸŽ“ Free GPA Calculator โ€” Semester, Cumulative and Weighted GPA

Trying to calculate your grade point average? The free MyCruncher GPA Calculator makes it easy to calculate your semester GPA, cumulative GPA or weighted high school GPA.

Whether you're a high school student planning for college, a university student monitoring academic progress or a parent helping with schoolwork, our calculator simplifies GPA calculations into a few easy steps.

Choose the GPA calculation method above, enter your grades and credit hours, and calculate your estimated GPA instantly.

The calculator supports a standard example 4.0 letter-grade scale and an illustrative weighted system for Honors and AP/IB courses. Because grading policies vary between schools, always compare the results with your institution's official GPA rules.

๐Ÿ“š What Is GPA?

GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It is a numerical measure of academic performance used by many high schools, colleges and universities.

Instead of displaying every individual course grade separately, GPA summarizes academic performance using a grading scale.

Many schools in the United States use an unweighted 4.0 scale, where an A is typically worth 4.0 grade points, a B is worth 3.0, a C is worth 2.0 and so on.

Why Is GPA Important?

GPA may be considered when evaluating academic standing, scholarships, admissions, honors eligibility and graduation progress. Requirements differ across institutions and programs.

Maintaining an accurate understanding of your GPA can help you set realistic academic goals and identify where additional improvement may help.

Important: Some high schools use different weighting methods, grade scales or class-level rules. The weighted GPA result is an estimate, not a guaranteed match to your school transcript.

๐Ÿ“Š GPA Grading Scale โ€” Letter Grades to Grade Points

The following table shows the example unweighted grade-point values used by the MyCruncher GPA Calculator.

Letter Grade Grade Points General Meaning
A+4.0Excellent
A4.0Excellent
A-3.7Excellent
B+3.3Above Average
B3.0Good
B-2.7Good
C+2.3Satisfactory
C2.0Satisfactory
C-1.7Below Average
D+1.3Low Passing Grade
D1.0Low Passing Grade
D-0.7Low Passing Grade
F0.0Failing

This is one commonly used plus/minus grade-point model. Some institutions assign different points to A+ grades, omit plus/minus grades or apply other conversion rules.

Does a 90% Always Equal a 4.0 GPA?

Not necessarily. Percentages must first be converted into letter grades according to your school's grading scale.

A 90% may be an A at one institution and an A- at another. The grade points assigned to that letter grade may also vary.

Our GPA Calculator accepts letter grades, rather than automatically converting percentages to letters.

๐Ÿ“˜ How to Calculate Semester GPA

Semester GPA is typically calculated by multiplying each course's grade points by its credit hours, adding the resulting quality points and dividing by total credits.

Semester GPA = Total Quality Points รท Total Credit Hours

Quality points for each course are calculated as:

Course Quality Points = Grade Points ร— Course Credit Hours

Example: Calculate a College Semester GPA

Suppose you complete the following courses:

Course Grade Credits Quality Points
English A (4.0) 3 12.0
Mathematics B+ (3.3) 3 9.9
Science B (3.0) 4 12.0
Total โ€” 10 33.9

Step 1: Multiply the grade points of each course by its credits.

Step 2: Add the quality points: 12 + 9.9 + 12 = 33.9.

Step 3: Add the credits: 3 + 3 + 4 = 10.

Step 4: Divide total quality points by credits: 33.9 รท 10 = 3.39.

Semester GPA: 3.39

This example matches the default Semester GPA values in the MyCruncher GPA Calculator.

Do Courses With More Credits Affect GPA More?

Yes. In a credit-weighted GPA system, a four-credit course generally has more influence on your GPA than a one-credit course.

That is why our Semester GPA Calculator asks for credit hours instead of simply averaging all letter grades equally.

๐Ÿ“ˆ How to Calculate Cumulative GPA

Your cumulative GPA combines eligible coursework from multiple semesters or academic terms.

To estimate a new cumulative GPA, you need your existing GPA, the credits associated with that GPA, your new semester GPA and the new semester's credits.

New Cumulative GPA = [(Current GPA ร— Completed Credits) + (New Semester GPA ร— New Credits)] รท Total Credits

Example: Calculate Your Updated Cumulative GPA

Suppose your academic record shows:

  • Current cumulative GPA: 3.25
  • Previously completed credits: 45
  • New semester GPA: 3.80
  • New semester credits: 15

Step 1: Multiply current GPA by completed credits.

3.25 ร— 45 = 146.25

Step 2: Multiply new semester GPA by new credits.

3.80 ร— 15 = 57.00

Step 3: Add the quality points.

146.25 + 57.00 = 203.25

Step 4: Add the credits.

45 + 15 = 60

Step 5: Divide the total quality points by the total credits.

203.25 รท 60 = 3.3875

Updated cumulative GPA: 3.39

The result is displayed to two decimal places in our calculator.

Why Can Cumulative GPA Be Harder to Change?

As you complete more credit hours, new courses represent a smaller portion of your total GPA calculation.

A strong semester may improve your cumulative GPA, but the change can be modest when many earlier credits are already included.

If your school excludes repeated courses, uses academic forgiveness policies, or handles transfer credits differently, the official cumulative GPA may not match a simple combined-credit calculation.

๐Ÿ… How to Calculate Weighted High School GPA

A weighted GPA provides additional grade points for qualifying advanced coursework, such as Honors, Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) classes.

The MyCruncher Weighted GPA mode uses the following illustrative bonuses:

Course Level Bonus Points Example: A Grade
Regular +0.0 4.0 points
Honors +0.5 4.5 points
AP / IB +1.0 5.0 points
Weighted GPA = Total Weighted Quality Points รท Total Credit Hours

Example: Calculate a Weighted High School GPA

Consider these three classes:

Course Grade Level Credits Quality Points
English A Regular 3 12.0
Math B+ Honors 3 11.4
Science B AP / IB 4 16.0
Total โ€” โ€” 10 39.4

For Honors Math, the B+ grade has 3.3 base points. Add 0.5 for Honors to get 3.8 points.

For AP Science, the B grade has 3.0 base points. Add 1.0 for AP/IB to get 4.0 points.

Total weighted quality points: 12 + 11.4 + 16 = 39.4.

Divide by total credits: 39.4 รท 10 = 3.94.

Weighted GPA: 3.94

Can a Weighted GPA Be Higher Than 4.0?

Yes. In a weighted system, qualifying advanced classes can earn more than 4.0 grade points.

Using our example scale, an A in an AP/IB course earns 5.0 grade points. However, not every school uses this exact weighting method.

โš–๏ธ Weighted GPA vs. Unweighted GPA

Both methods summarize academic performance, but they treat course difficulty differently.

Feature Unweighted GPA Weighted GPA
Typical scale Up to 4.0 Often up to 5.0 or another school-specific maximum
Advanced class bonus Not included May be included
Course credit hours Can affect results Can affect results
Common use College and high school calculations High school course rigor evaluations
School policies May vary Often vary substantially

A weighted GPA is not automatically a better measure than an unweighted GPA. Both reflect different aspects of a student's academic record.

Colleges and scholarship programs may review grades, courses and academic rigor using their own evaluation methods.

  5. Seek academic support early. Talk with instructors, tutors or academic advisers before falling too far behind in a course.
  6. Review the official transcript. Use official records to verify which courses and credits are included in your GPA.

โ“ Frequently Asked Questions About GPA

How do I calculate my GPA?

Convert each letter grade into grade points, multiply by the course credits, add the total quality points and divide by the total credits. The GPA Calculator above performs these steps automatically.

How do I calculate my college GPA?

Choose Semester GPA and enter each college course, its letter grade and credit hours. The calculator uses the selected grade-point values and course credits to estimate your GPA.

How do I calculate cumulative GPA?

Multiply your current GPA by completed credits, add the product of your new semester GPA and new credits, then divide by the combined credits. This assumes both GPAs use compatible grading scales.

What is considered a good GPA?

A good GPA depends on your academic goals, school, program and the requirements you are trying to meet. A 3.0 or higher may satisfy some requirements, while selective programs may expect stronger academic performance.

What is the difference between GPA and a percentage grade?

A percentage grade measures the proportion of points earned or the result of a grading policy. GPA converts academic grades into grade points and often averages them according to course credits.

Is a 4.0 GPA the highest possible GPA?

A 4.0 is the maximum on many unweighted scales. Weighted systems may allow higher values, such as 4.5 or 5.0.

What does a 3.5 GPA mean?

A 3.5 GPA represents an average of 3.5 grade points per credit on a 4.0 scale. It falls between the grade-point values typically assigned to a B and an A, although the exact interpretation depends on the school's grading scale.

How do Honors and AP classes affect GPA?

In schools that use weighted grading, Honors and AP/IB classes may receive additional grade points. The amount of the bonus depends on school policy.

Does a failed class affect GPA?

Often, yes. An F commonly contributes zero quality points while the associated credits remain in the GPA calculation. However, institutional rules vary.

Do pass/fail classes count toward GPA?

Many institutions exclude qualifying pass/fail courses from GPA calculations, but policies vary. Check whether the course is included in your school's GPA credits.

Do repeated classes replace previous grades?

Some schools replace earlier grades under grade-replacement policies, while others count both attempts. The calculator does not automatically apply grade-replacement rules.

Can I calculate my GPA without credit hours?

If all courses carry equal credit weight, you can enter the same credit value for each class. If the courses have different credits, use the actual values for a more accurate estimate.

How can I raise my cumulative GPA?

Completing future GPA-eligible courses with higher grades may improve your cumulative GPA. The size of the change depends on your existing credits, current GPA and future performance.

Why is my GPA different from my school's GPA?

Schools may use different grade-point conversions, weighting methods, course exclusions, rounding rules, or repeat-course policies. Your official transcript takes precedence.

Can high school students use this GPA Calculator?

Yes. High school students can calculate a standard unweighted GPA or explore the illustrative Weighted GPA mode for Regular, Honors and AP/IB classes.
