📊 Grade Breakdown
Visual Grade Comparison
Class grades use total points earned divided by total points possible. Weighted grades use category averages multiplied by their weights. Final exam calculations assume your current course average represents all non-final coursework.
Schools may have different policies for rounding, extra credit, missing assignments, and letter grades. Always compare these estimates with your syllabus.

| Final Exam Grade | Planning for an upcoming final | Score needed on the final exam |
📝 How to Calculate Your Class Grade
For a points-based grading system, add up all the points you earned and divide by the total number of points possible. Multiply the result by 100 to convert it into a percentage.
Example: Calculate Your Current Class Grade
Imagine you completed three assignments:
| Assignment | Points Earned | Points Possible |
|---|---|---|
| Homework | 90 | 100 |
| Quiz | 45 | 50 |
| Test | 80 | 100 |
| Total | 215 | 250 |
Step 1: Add points earned: 90 + 45 + 80 = 215.
Step 2: Add points possible: 100 + 50 + 100 = 250.
Step 3: Divide: 215 ÷ 250 = 0.86.
Step 4: Multiply by 100.
Why You Should Add Points Instead of Averaging Percentages
When assignments have different maximum point values, simply averaging their percentages can produce the wrong overall grade.
For example, a 10-point quiz and a 100-point exam do not have equal influence in a total-points system. The 100-point exam contributes more points.
Always use the calculation method specified by your instructor or school.
⚖️ How to Calculate a Weighted Grade
Some classes assign different levels of importance to homework, quizzes, projects, and exams. This is called a weighted grading system.
Each category receives a percentage weight representing how much it contributes to your overall course grade.
Example: Calculate a Weighted Course Grade
| Category | Grade | Weight | Contribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Homework | 90% | 30% | 27% |
| Quizzes | 85% | 20% | 17% |
| Tests | 80% | 50% | 40% |
| Total | — | 100% | 84% |
Homework contribution: 90 × 0.30 = 27.
Quiz contribution: 85 × 0.20 = 17.
Test contribution: 80 × 0.50 = 40.
Add the contributions: 27 + 17 + 40 = 84.
Do Grading Weights Have to Total 100%?
For a complete weighted course grade, the category weights generally total 100%. Check your syllabus to confirm the weights.
If some categories have not been graded yet, your instructor may temporarily exclude them or redistribute the active weights. This can make your school’s displayed grade different from a calculation using all syllabus weights.
🎯 What Grade Do I Need on My Final Exam?
If you know your current course grade and how much your final exam counts, you can calculate the exam score required to achieve your desired final grade.
In this formula, enter the final exam weight as a decimal. For example, a 25% exam weight is 0.25. The formula assumes your current grade represents all non-final-exam coursework.
Example: What Do I Need to Get an 88%?
Suppose:
- Current class grade: 85%
- Desired final course grade: 88%
- Final exam weight: 25%
First calculate the portion of your grade already determined:
85 × 0.75 = 63.75
Now subtract this contribution from the target grade:
88 − 63.75 = 24.25
Finally, divide by the final exam weight:
24.25 ÷ 0.25 = 97
What If the Calculator Says You Need More Than 100%?
A result above 100% means the desired course grade cannot be reached with a standard final exam capped at 100%, assuming no extra credit or other grading adjustments are available.
For example, if you have an 85% current grade, the final is worth 25%, and your goal is 90%, the required exam score is 105%.
📊 Class Grades vs. Weighted Grades
Understanding your school’s grading method is important because the same assignment scores can produce different final percentages.
| Feature | Points-Based Grade | Weighted Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Calculation basis | Points earned versus points possible | Category percentages and weights |
| Assignment influence | Usually depends on point value | Depends on category weight |
| Common examples | Individual assignments and quizzes | Homework, exams, projects |
| Information needed | Earned and possible points | Category grades and weights |
| Where to verify | Course grading instructions | Course syllabus |
If you’re uncertain which method applies to your course, check the syllabus or ask your instructor before relying on a calculated grade.
🏅 What Letter Grade Is My Percentage?
Schools often translate percentages into letter grades. The following table shows a commonly used grading scale in the United States, but it is not universal.
| Percentage Range | Example Letter Grade | General Description |
|---|---|---|
| 90–100% | A | Excellent |
| 80–89.99% | B | Good |
| 70–79.99% | C | Satisfactory |
| 60–69.99% | D | Below average |
| Below 60% | F | Failing |
Some schools use plus/minus grades, different cutoffs, standards-based grading, or a curve. Always follow the grading scale published by your school.
💡 Tips for Improving and Tracking Your Grades
- Check your syllabus. Confirm how your school calculates grades before entering assignments or category weights.
- Keep assignment scores updated. Add newly graded coursework so your estimate reflects your current performance.
- Focus on high-weight categories. In a weighted course, improvements in exams may have a greater effect than improvements in lower-weight homework categories.
- Plan before the final exam. Use Final Exam Grade mode early enough to set a realistic study target.
- Review missing assignments. A zero or unsubmitted assignment can strongly affect your course grade, particularly when it has a high point value.
- Understand rounding policies. Schools may round displayed grades or calculate them using more decimal places than appear in the gradebook.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions About Grade Calculations
How do I calculate my current grade?
For a points-based class, divide your total earned points by your total possible points, then multiply by 100. If your class uses category weights, calculate the weighted contribution of each category instead.
How do I calculate a grade percentage?
Divide the points earned by the points possible and multiply by 100. For example, 45 points out of 50 equals 90%.
What is a weighted grade?
A weighted grade gives different types of coursework different levels of importance. A final exam worth 40% affects the course grade more than a homework category worth 10%.
How do I calculate my final grade?
Multiply each grading component by its assigned weight, then add the contributions. For a points-based course, divide total earned points by total possible points. The correct method depends on the syllabus.
